KEY QUESTIONS
1. Is the contractor licensed in the state of New York? Call your local consumer affairs agency (Suffolk County 631.853.4600 or Nassau County 516.571.2600) to be sure.
2. Does the contractor carry insurance that protects you from claims arising due to property damage or jobsite injuries? Make them prove it. Ask for a copy of the contractor insurance certificates so you can be sure that you are not liable for property damage or jobsite-related injuries.
3. Will the contractor arrange for building permits?
4. What kind of warranty comes with your project and how long
is it in force?
5. Will the contractor provide complete written contract specifications, a contract with start and stop dates, 3-day Right of Rescission, and accurate working drawings?
ESTIMATES
If you get several estimates, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Estimates from different contractors need to be based on identical project specifications.
